Episode 21: A Thin Sludge Along the Sidewalks

January 11th, 2013 | Robin

Our first episode of the new year begins in the Gaming Hut, where we examine the difference between showing up to be entertained, and showing up to play.

Ask Ken and Robin fields Paul Weimer’s question about fudging die rolls—when, if ever, is it acceptable?

The Politics Hut takes on the classic modernist curvature of Toronto’s city hall as Robin recounts the saga that can only be called The Assassination of His Own Mayoralty by the Lunkhead Rob Ford. (Since we recorded, the libel suit against Ford Robin mentions was dismissed. But still, the point stands…)

And finally, in Ken’s Time Machine, our maverick chrono-detective chafes at the fussy over-caution of his superiors as they send him to 1888 to find out who Jack the Ripper was—without simply showing up at one of the murder scenes.

  1. Terry says:

Patricia Cornwell’s Portrait of a Killer presents a theory about Jack’s identity that I found very convincing.

  2. Cambias says:

As to fudging: in my most long-running campaign I explicitly told my players that their characters would not die unless they chose to do so. I could get away with it because I could trust the players not to abuse their immortality, and it helped to prevent them from being hypercautious and boring.

  3. Daniel says:

The Jack the Ripper part was great :-]

  4. Tom Clare says:

Robin, I enjoyed hearing all about Rob Ford. I was amused to read that he has recently announced that he wants to cut departments of the integrity commissioner (who caught him out in the whole conflict-of-interest business), the Ombudsman, and the lobbyist registrar – all the departments that exist to keep an eye of characters such as Ford!
