Episode 57: Live from FanExpo Canada

September 20th, 2013 | Robin

Join us for a very special live episode of Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff, live from FanExpo Canada. Hop in our time machine and journey back to Toronto on the weekend before Labor Day to hear about ninja anti-competition efforts, our most hated gaming clichés, and much, much more. Not to mention the toxic menace of the cronut burger.

Joining us as very special sponsor is the Bundle of Holding, which just happens to be offering an incredible Ken and Robin-related deal—the Bundle of GUMSHOE! Until Saturday, Sept 28th, you can grab PDFs of Ashen Stars, Mutant City Blues, See Page XX v1, and the first four issues of Ken Writes About Stuff — plus a 1-year KWAS subscription. Pay more than the current average and grab Night’s Black Agents and The Zalozhniy Quartet, too—plus additional sweeteners yet to be announced!

Also sponsoring us this week, writer and musician David Maurice Garrett. Check out his book Tome of Horror and his album Al Azif.

A surfeit of lampreys, not eels. (Go look up lampreys: they’re a lot weirder and more Cthuloid than mere eels. Still a popular dish in parts of Eastern Europe too.)

I think the mole in the first MISSION IMPOSSIBLE film was a good thing. Because it’s Jim Phelps and they make it make sense! Fan service! Nerdgasm! But a magician should not repeat his effects.

  2. Ironically, in adult humans, botulism is most commonly a result of badly canned food; it’s almost unknown from eating unpreserved food. Natural food that has decayed to the point of producing botulism toxin is so obviously rotted that humans won’t eat it, but canned food can hide the organism and the toxin without being as offensive.

    Hi boys,

I need help getting into running a serious game. I have been playing DnD and other games on and off since 84 and running since 2002 but all my games have been loosey-goosey and kind of fluffy. I want to run a more serious Call of C’thulhu and I have good players but I would like advise or directions of good things to read so I can run a good horror game. I just want to do a good job and i worry I will let things get goofy

    Thanks

    R

Literature wise if you are going to run Call of Cthulhu or Trail of Cthulhu, you need to read the inspiration that created the game, H.P. Lovecraft. I’d also recommend Shotguns v. Cthulhu a fabulous anthology edited by Robin D. Laws, especially if you want action based horror. If you are interested in running Horror in general you need to read more Ken Hite. Any of his advice in Trail of Cthulhu or Night’s Black Agents and especially GURPS Horror is invaluable.

    Bibliography

    Books
Michael Babcock – The Night Attila Died: Solving the Murder of Attila the Hun – the most likely reference I could find.

    Movies
    Mission Impossible by Brian DePalma
Mission Impossible 2 by John Woo
Mission Impossible 3 by J.J. Abrams
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol by Brad Bird
    Ninja Assassin by James McTeigue
