Episode 113: And the Heads of a Whole Bunch of People

October 31st, 2014 | Robin

In the Gaming Hut we consider the dividing line between fun character customization and tiresome homework, and whether it’s moving lately.

Still in a Draculanean mood, Ken enters the Book Hut for a vantage on the career of Bram Stoker.

We rev up the Recommendation Engine for its sophomore run to talk about a movie, a record, some books, and one of our favorite leaves.

Then Ken’s Time Machine essays a daring escape as Ken rescues Marie Antoinette.

Attention, class! Anchor sponsor Atlas Games wants to enroll you in Mad Scientist University, the card game of evil genius, insane assignments, and unstable elements. Act now, Ken and Robin listeners, and they’ll throw in the Spring Break expansion set for free. Shipping within the US is also free.

Grab your battlemat and head on over to the Kickstarter for ArcKnight’s Flat Plastic Miniatures. Their new transparency format combines snazzy looks with a great bargain, giving you more figures than competing styles.

    Yeah, Paul!

  2. Jeff Kahrs says:

Nice try at misinformation, Ken. Telling us how Bran Stoker “made up” Dracula. I mean you are already telling us the truth in your other project.

  3. KenR says:

Similar to Jeff Kahrs, I find myself wondering where Bram Stoker found time to work with English Intelligence with so much else on his plate. Or was that the real reason for his tours?

On the note of food hut and food recommendations, the keffir lime leaves sound delicious. Robin has mentioned slow cooker pomegranate chicken in the past – is this similar to the Persian pomegranate chicken recipes available online or is it a cross-cultural creation?

There isn’t a Dracula Dossier kickstarter up yet and this episode came out five hours ago. Technical difficulties?

    • KenH says:

Pelgrane’s phones and Internet went out on Thursday, which has delayed the DRACULA DOSSIER Kickstarter yet again. It’s almost as if some shadowy, vampiric force didn’t want the book to come out …

One could make the case that a post-Bonaparte Bourbon restoration with Louis XVII and his mom the Queen Regent could turn out worse than Louis XVIII. Sure, Marie was a well-meaning person before the Revolution, but the takeaway from all that for her might be “make sure any signs of dissent are put down swiftly and permanently.” And I doubt a young king who remembers growing up in a dungeon and fleeing for his life would dispute that much. France might wind up as reactionary as Austria-Hungary or Russia, leaving Germany as the liberal beacon on the Continent.

A more reactionary France would also be much more aggressive about putting the kibosh on any revolutionary movements in Italy. By the end of the 19th century you’d have an even more monarchical world than our own, with only the New World republics as non-kingdoms (and many of them doing a bad job of not being monarchies at that).

  6. Geoff Nelson says:

AK&R:Why do you suppose art figures so heavily into horror (The Call of C’thulhu, The King in Yellow, The Portrait of Dorian Gray) and do you have any suggestions for gaming that trope?

  7. GB Steve says:

George Saunders is a big favourite of mine, although I’m not so sure about his latest collection, which seems to be the one that has got him the most notice. The NY Times love him so read his story Adams there.

  8. Allan Goodall says:

Hi, folks! Just a head’s up, but it looks like the link to Mad Scientist University, in episode 113 and attached to the Spring Break graphic, is broken. The link with the text “Act now” works but if you click on the Spring Break picture, the link takes you to an error page.

Love the podcast, by the way! Any chance of getting a separate page with a list of Recommendation Hut items? I listen to the podcast while driving back and forth to work. Depending on timing, jotting down the recommendations isn’t possible, and so I have to rely on memory.

      This, please.

We recognize the value of show notes but just don’t have time to do them. Jeromy French has been valiantly striving to fill the gap but is just one man.
