Episode 282: Haunted Anarchist Texts

March 2nd, 2018 | Robin

In the Gaming Hut we put up our dukes and look at ways to frame fights that advance the story.

Oscar time is upon us, so as is our annual wont we pop into the Cinema Hut for a look back at our favorite films of 2017.

Recovering from the red carpet, we visit the Consulting Occultist, who has been checking out the initial offerings placed online by the Ritman Library of occult texts.

Regarding the Ritman Library: An early episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (1.8: “I Robot, You Jane”) provides an excellent cautionary tale about the dangers of scanning occult texts. (And also about trusting people you meet online, which is even more relevant now that *everyone* is on social media.)

For anyone who didn’t have a piece of paper handy during the movie list:

    Ken’s film list:
    10. Blade of the Immortal
    9. Logan Lucky
    8. They Remain (apparently not yet widely released)
    7. November (Estonian fairy tale)
    6. Get Out
    5. The Girl with All the Gifts
    4. Logan
    3. Ladybird
    2. Phantom Thread
    1. Dunkirk

    Robin’s film list:
    10. Blade Runner 2049
    9. Faces, Places
    8. Okja
    7. Frantz
    6. The Big Sick
    5. The Girl with All the Gifts
    4. Baby Driver
    3. The Bad Batch
    2. Phantom Thread
    1. Get Out

Can someone point me to the episode with Robin’s Lady Bird segment? I seem to have missed that one.

I’m intrigued that Shape of Water, which would seem to click with many of the elements of the creative works of our hosts, didn’t make the top 10 lists above but won Best Picture. I myself walked out with some artistic disagreements but preferred it over at least a couple of choices that made the cut. It would be interesting to hear what our hosts think the Academy voters saw in it that they didn’t but I suspect that would be hard to do without being too hard on the director, who I think they both like.

  5. Steve Dempsey says:

The Ritman Library also has a great series of podcasts about hermiticism in the Infinite Fire series (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPj3QOg8YXA&list=PL3shawgvk4eDElg4CKzL_LQaKwj_Io0Tn).

And if podcasts are more your bag, SHWEP is pretty good too (https://shwep.net/), although generally covering a much earlier period.
