Episode 313: All the Hitting in the World

October 5th, 2018 | Robin

The Cinema Hut bursts with upcoming delights as Robin returns from his annual jaunt to Toronto International Film Festival to provide highlights on a banner year.

In the Gaming Hut we tackle a perennial problem: how do you make sure the talky PC gets to talk to the talky NPC before the killy PC kills him with his proverbial axe?

Finally the Conspiracy Corner digs into an archetypal case of magical thinking gone devastatingly wrong, the Satanic Panic of the 80s and early 90s.

Can you guys please talk about this. “Interpol chief Meng Hongwei vanishes on trip to China” https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-45761466

  2. Ben says:

I wish you listed the titles of the films discussed during the episode in the show notes.

    • Martyn says:

I agree, a list would be really useful for reference. I can never remember after I have listened to the episode.

Coming up in the late 80’s and early 90’s in an Evangelical church going family, I was prohibited from playing any RPGs due to the Satanic Panic ideas floating around. Fortunately for me and many other young Christian would-be gamers at the time, our religious culture didn’t have the same kind of problem with J.R.R. Tolkein and C.S. Lewis’s fantasy novels, and eventually we also had things like Star Wars card games and fantasy computer games to start breaking up that ice (while we avoided bringing up stuff like the White Wolf games that would have perhaps reinforced some of those fears).

Nowadays I think most of that concern has dissipated, partially due to the ascent of geek influence in every sector of culture including Evangelical folks, and partially due to the simple transfer of attention over time to other focuses of concern.

    Films discussed:
“Pinnacles”: Aniara (Sweden), Shadow (China), Shoplifters (Japan), Burning (South Korea), High Life (France).

“Good”: Vision (Japan), Border (Sweden), Cities of Last Things (Taiwan), Legend of the Demon Cat (China), Edge of the Knife (Canada), Killing (Japan), Diamantino (Portugal).
