Episode 173: The Unknown Quadruped

January 15th, 2016 | Robin

In the Gaming Hut we rise to popular new demand to riff a whole bunch of scenario entry-points to get you started with a Dracula Dossier campaign.

As teased last episode, the History Hut looks at anatomical tables, as seen in our December visit to London’s Royal College of Physicians.

Continuing the London weirdness, the Eliptony Hut takes on an Egyptian revival exterior as we probe into rumors of a time machine in the Brompton Cemetery.

Finally, conveniently placed for the spoiler averse, those of you who wanted to hear Ken and Robin talk about Star Wars: The Force Awakens can start lining up at the Cinema Hut.

Ken and Robin have oft been accused of being cards. Well, we can deny it no longer. We have become super-limited promo cards for Murder of Crows, Atlas Games’ fast-paced card game of murder and the macabre, for two to five players in the mood for something a little morbid. It’s Edward Gorey meets Caligari, by way of Edgar Allan Poe. Wait a minute, what does that graphic say? I’m not so sure about this… Ken fans who did not partake of the Kickstarter can now sink their fangs into the general release of the Dracula Dossier from Pelgrane Press, consisting of the Director’s Handbook and Dracula Unredacted. You say that’s still not enough Ken for you? Very well, my friend. His brilliant pieces on parasitic gaming, alternate Newtons, Dacian werewolves and more now lurk among the sparkling bounty of The Best of FENIX Volumes 1-3, from returning sponsors Askfageln. Yes, it’s Sweden’s favorite RPG magazine, now beautifully collected. Warning: not in Swedish. In a move that surely violates someone’s security clearance, this episode is also brought to you by our friends at Arc Dream Publishing. The Kickstarter for Delta Green: the Roleplaying Game has come to an end, but don’t let that stop you from indulging your fever for this classic game, or that pinnacle of the Cthulhu game zine world, The Unspeakable Oath.

  1. Other uses for dissection evidence:

    * There is a secret race living among us, whose existence can be proved by subtle differences in historical dissections. That evidence can be used to identify those individuals today.
    * One of the dissections was of an obviously alien species that invaded years ago. The aliens are about to return and invade and the dissection provides the secrets to defense.
    * One of the dissections (stored in a little-known sub-basement, of course) is that of a cryptid. Perhaps an intelligent cryptid that would really prefer that it never be examined.

Inspired by your recent discussion of nervous systems varnished to tables, I must ask Ken & Robin: Do you think it is possible that, in an alternate universe, Alex Grey’s “Sacred Mirrors” paintings could have been corrupted (perhaps by his early necromantic performance art conducted while he was working in a morgue) and are actually dark magic? http://alexgrey.com/art/paintings/sacred-mirrors/360-view/ Or, are these really visualization aids for humans to achieve paranormal powers and that must be protected from the nefarious forces?

Just a big cheers to Ken & Robin as listening to them has not only caused my bookcases & video library to be overburdened with joy on new recommendations but also quite a lot of newfound flexibility with games when some issue comes up of focusing on the story more than the mechanics to get to somewhere fun for all.

Also agreed about the Star Wars characters needing care from the designers before the audience can care about them, simple & profound right there. They could have easily just made him a junior armory technician & worked a lot better on why he’s in the field over a guy shouting at droids to get the non-Endor scented bottle of floor cleaner.

I have a request for Ken’s Time Machine. The request is: please explain what Edgar Allan Poe is trying to achieve with his time travel? And what has Ken had to do to counter Poes plans. Please see link with proofs of said time travel.

The Royal College of Surgeons has the Hunterian Museum, with a remarkable collection of specimens from various species. Worth a look on a future visit. It includes half of Charles Babbage’s brain; I won’t tell you where the other half is, as it’s easy enough to find, but they must never be allowed to rejoin.

Ken Loach’s take on Star Wars, you mean this

  7. Yeah, the resistance having to steal the map would have been more awesome, but R2 isn’t that coincidental – the fact that it seem so bad, is bad in itself.

When R2 wakes up, c3PO says in response to his beeping “You found it?”, which suggests that R2 was busy hacking, decrypting, or some other way of looking for the map. Perhaps he was accessing the old imperial network that Kylo Ren mentions, but couldn’t get in until that shield went down.
